Shaded areas need not be bare. Ferns are ideal for shaded areas. Some can be used in sunny moist spots as well such as near ponds and streams for a true woodland look.


Lady Fern (Athyrium filix-femina)

Lady fern has feathery fronds and will tolerate sun more that most ferns. Hardy ferns enjoy moist, shady locations. Will tolerate sun if soil is kept moist, as on the edge of a pond or stream Zone 3-9

Cinnamon Fern (Osmunda cinnamonmea)

Bright green turning to rich cinnamon brown and resembling cinnamon sticks. Will thrive in moist, acidic soil. Hardy ferns are excellent at the edge of a pond or stream. Zone 3-9

Royal Fern (Osmunda regalis)

A Royal Fern whose pale green foliage turns golden green color in the fall. Hardy ferns enjoy moist, shady locations. Will tolerate sun if soil is kept moist, as on the edge of a pond or stream Zone 3-9

Alaskan Fern (Polistychum polyblepharum)

A flat growing fern that has deepgreen shiny leaves. One of the best. Zone 3-9
